Part of Franchise lead generation: stages, channels and measurement

Is every inquiry really a lead, and when must the FDD go out?

Common franchise lead generation questions cover qualification, brokers, earnings claims, disclosure timing, response, consent, attribution, and funnel quality.

What to take away

  • Define a lead, qualified candidate, award, opening, and healthy unit separately.
  • Give brokers and vendors the same approved claim and record rules as employees.
  • Measure informed fit and system health, not inquiry volume alone.
  • Deliver the FDD at least 14 calendar days before a prospect signs or pays; some states require longer.
  • Keep the version you delivered and the signed receipt for at least three years.

Common franchise lead generation questions usually expose missing definitions. A development team answers them consistently only when marketing, sales, legal, finance, operations and leadership share one set of candidate stages and one approved source file.

Is every inquiry really a lead?

No. Sort the raw traffic before anyone calls it a lead. Split valid, duplicate, invalid, existing and misrouted inquiries into separate queues.

Unconsented and knowingly requested inquiries get their own queues. Qualification comes later and follows written criteria. This keeps vendors from receiving credit for names the team could not or should not pursue.

Most teams sort that traffic in a CRM. HubSpot's free tier and Zoho CRM's free plan for up to three users suit small development teams.

Salesforce Sales Cloud typically runs about $25 per user per month on its entry plan. CallRail adds call tracking per number, typically a few tens of dollars a month.

What may a broker or agency say?

Give third parties approved claims, current source dates, required context and prohibited statements. Add escalation contacts and withdrawal instructions. Monitor the actual ads, pages, calls, events and messages. A signed contract does not make inconsistent language harmless.

FranNet, IFPG and the Franchise Brokers Association are broker networks paid by franchisors, usually a share of the initial franchise fee. Portals such as Franchise Gator and Franchise.com sell inquiry packages.

The current federal Franchise Rule text defines key terms and sets disclosure requirements and prohibitions for covered franchise offers and sales. Its deceptive-practice provisions reach franchise brokers as well as franchisors.

Read that rule with current FTC guidance and applicable state law. It does not prescribe a marketing funnel, but it controls the path from promotion to sale.

When must the FDD go out? The 14-day and 10-business-day rules

The federal rule sets a 14-calendar-day clock. A franchisor must give a prospective franchisee the FDD at least 14 calendar days before the prospect signs a binding agreement or pays the franchisor or an affiliate.

A group of registration states requires at least 10 business days: Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota and New York are commonly cited. Some states set a longer window, so confirm your state's rule before you put timing into a training script.

Electronic delivery works when the prospect can download, store, print and review the document, per FTC guidance.

The document ends with a receipt page. Give the prospect two copies, ask for one signed receipt back, and keep the delivered version plus the receipt for at least three years. Refresh the FDD within 120 days of fiscal year end.

Do not improvise a timing answer in content or sales training. Marketing systems should not create artificial urgency that conflicts with the required review window. Changed agreements and unusual facts need qualified advice, recorded as delivery date, method and version.

When must the FDD go out?

QuestionOperational record
Who requested contact?Source, timestamp, page, and notice
What was promised?Creative, version, and approved evidence
Who responded?Owner, time, channel, and content
Why did the candidate progress?Criteria and completed step
Why did the candidate stop?Neutral disposition and feedback
When did the FDD go out?Delivery date, method, version, and receipt

The FTC's Franchise Rule overview summarizes that prospective purchasers must receive a disclosure document with 23 specified items, and links to the rule, compliance guide, FAQs, notices and opinions. Use it as a control-page reference, then confirm the current requirements for the transaction.

Should marketing promise a callback in minutes?

Promise only what the team can deliver across hours and time zones. An immediate confirmation can verify the request and explain the next step.

Calendly's free tier covers one event type, enough for a scheduling link. A human response should be timely and useful, not a burst of repeated calls.

Resolve the question with a decision record

The GAO evaluation design guide connects evaluation questions with evidence needs and design choices. Apply that discipline to common franchise lead generation questions; federal evaluation guidance does not make a local marketing result causal or transferable.

The W3C Privacy Principles statement gives web-system designers shared privacy concepts and warns against shifting privacy work to individuals. Apply it to consent, tracking and vendor access, then review the governing law and configuration.

A useful answer names the decision owner, eligible population, evidence period, method and action. It also states what the result cannot establish, and saves the definition and date with the answer.

When the same question returns, compare the records before changing the metric. That step exposes a changed population or source instead of treating every difference as new behavior.

Keep the evidence record beside the decision so a reviewer can reproduce the reasoning.

Common questions

Are more leads always better?

No. More suitable, informed candidates can be valuable. More duplicates, accidental forms or poorly matched inquiries consume capacity.

Who owns funnel attribution?

Marketing operations maintain definitions with finance and development; source owners correct missing identifiers and sales record outcomes.

Can one close-rate benchmark fit every source?

No. Compare cohorts with enough volume and similar definitions, lag, cost, qualification and market conditions.

Does the 14-day clock start at first contact?

No. It runs from delivery of the FDD to signature or payment, and state law can lengthen it. Document the delivery date, method and version.
